Autodesk Revit: Architecture, Structural and MEP - The Design Revolution

Welcome to Revitup, South Africa's largest dedicated Revit resource site, designed to help those users already working on Revit, as well as offering information for those looking to find out more about making the move towards the most powerful Building Information Modeling (BIM) package in the market place.

Architecture has an important role to play in reflecting the ethos and changing values of a transforming society. This requires new directions in South African architecture, and new approaches to design that provide opportunities for relevance and innovation.

Modena Design’s Revit Content Drive

Due to the lack of SA Content for Revit (Architecture, MEP & Structure), Modena Design Centres is having a content drive where we will be asking everyone for the Content that they have put together

We are creating a controlled community where only the people who have contributed their content will have access to the material. This content will be available from a link on our Modena website called Revit-IT.Everyone will have to log-in and usage of the content will be monitored.

WHY?

The question you are having why should I send my content, firstly you will be able to download some content that people in your industry (architecture, structure, MEP or even Interior designers) have spent time creating.

Secondly, Modena Design will be converting your content into Revit 2010 format.

This initiative is open to all Modena Design Centres clients. If you are interested in this initiative, if you could please put your content on a flash drive/CD/DVD for us to pick up or if convenient for you, you are most welcome to drop it off at our offices

If you have any concerns or queries with regards to this content drive please email Cindy on sales2@modena.co.za or Shaun on shaun@modena.co.za or give us a call 011 463 1553

Augi has just released AUGI/AEC

AUGI AEC Edge is dedicated to bringing our members current, actionable, practical content to those involved in the Architectural, Engineering, Construction and Owners marketplace. The content is open to all members, but will focus on the industries that design, engineer, construct and maintain the built environment. Design tools range from AutoCAD, AutoCAD Architecture, the Revit platforms, 3DS Max and Design, Navisworks, programming tools and may even spill over into Civil 3D, Map, Inventor, Maya and others as they touch this market. We are not limited to just software, we may discuss methods, emerging trends, project spotlights, CAD and BIM Management, education, training and more

I came across some interesting articles:

NEW!! from Autodesk Labs Solar Radiation Technology (Revit Architecture & MEP)

Use the Solar Radiation Technology Preview to analyze the effects of solar radiation on various surfaces of your conceptual building model. Using the Solar Radiation Technology Preview during the conceptual design stage of your project can help you make fundamental design decisions about building shape, orientation, and surfaces early on, when changes are least expensive.

Autodesk Seek

Revit 2010 now offers enhanced interoperability between other software packages, one such package is Autodesk Seek. With Autodesk® Seek you can find and share product design information with the online design community to enhance designs and to meet specific customer needs. It allows designers to search for, download, and integrate generic or manufacturer-specific building products or components and associated design information.

When you are working in a design program, you may want to include products that, for example, meet design standards for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Autodesk® Seek can help you locate such information and products, and get them into your design.

The design and product information available on Autodesk® Seek depends on what content providers, both corporate partners and individual contributors publish to Autodesk® Seek. Such content could include 3D models, 2D drawings, specifications, brochures, or descriptions of products or components.

You can access Autodesk® Seek in the following ways:

·From the Autodesk® Seek home page http://seek.Autodesk®.com

·On the Insert tab for searching

·Click Publish Share with Autodesk® Seek to share online content

Yet another Revit MEP Extension - Revit MEP Space Naming Utility

The space naming utility software is an intuitive tool that automatically assigns names and numbers from architectural rooms to Revit MEP spaces

* It can both name and number the spaces similar to the enclosed architectural rooms

* It can automatically name/number all spaces in a model, or by specific level

This is only available for subscription customers, to download click here

Revit MEP Extension

Residential HVAC Load Calculation Extension

The residential HVAC Calculation Extension software system is a residential & light commercial HVAC load calculation software package.

The purpose of this software is to provide the user with total cooling and heating loads for a building so that they may properly specify the correct size HVAC equipment. The extension is available for subscription customers only

Bridge Modeling - Free For Revit Structure Subscription Customers

The bridge modeling software is an add-on for Revit Structure provided you are on subscriptions. Using this Bridge Modeling Revit Extension, you can generate bridges based on user-defined criteria.

Users can define basic parameters of geometry of a bridge including: a road profile, a deck, autments, piers and railings. The road profile may also be imported from a Land XML file format. The bridge is generated based on user-defined famalies that are provided with these Revit Extensions

6 Phases of a Revit User

Phase 1: Initial excitement = "WOW, look what I can do with this thing"

Phase 2: First Bump = Hmmmm? Why won't it do what I want? That's how I do it in (insert other CAD software here)"

Phase 3: Creamy middle= mmm, things are going more smoothly now, mmmm

Phase 4: HELP = The family editor "eats you up & spits you out"

Phase 5: The enlightenment = Things really begin to click! you understand why things are happening in your model, and better yet how to control them and avoid problems. You have conquered the family editor

Phase 6: Zen of Revit = You have mastered nearly all things Revit. You "know" what Revit "likes" & what it "dislikes" during model construction, a sixth sense, really. You spend your time exploring parameters, AR3. You have a template to beat all templates and families for every situation.

Importing Civil 3D into Revit

It is often a question; transferring data from Revit to other Autodesk applications. One example is taking a Civil 3D site model and using it in Revit for your topograhic surface

All a Civil 3D user really needs to do is save the civil file & send it off to the architect. The architect can then link that file into Revit and create a site using the site tools in Revit Architecture.

The one limitation with this process is that the Civil Engineer needs to set a system variable in Civil 3D so that Revit can read all the civil data. Setting proxygraphics equal to 1 in Civil 3D & then saving the drawing, this will let the architect see all the Civil stuff in Revit Architecture.

The next step is importing this surface into Revit Architecture & using it to create a topograhic surface. A video will help you in doing this...click here

Time from design and concept stage, to working drawing stage has been CUT by 70%
